How should we use attendance statistics?

4cb0f44d2fb1b.imageHere are two posts that just came out today with contrasting views on the use of attendance statistics in church life?  Actually, i think both are right and we need to have a healthy view of what numbers actually mean.  Dr. Chuck Lawless argues for the use of statistics, with some healthy warnings in “Why Church Numbers Matter.”  J.I Packer says that,
“Too Many Churches in North America are Playing the Numbers Game.’ .  Hope you will read both and let me know what you think.

  1. Both articles hit the nail on the head. I have seen to many Churches focus on providing programs and events to draw people to Church. I agree that increasing numbers should not be the primary focus of any Church. As stated, the Church should focus on Biblical preaching and teaching that allows the Holy Spirit to draw people into the Church. I agree that the Church should not focus on entertaining people; resulting in developing weak Christians just to increase their numbers. Sound Biblical teaching and allowing the Holy Spirit to work during services will result in bringing the right number of people into the Church that God can use for His Glory.

Enjoyed reading both articles, thanks for posting.

  2. Completely with you, brother. I think both articles taken together give us a healthy understanding of how to use attendance statistics. Thanks for the comment!
