Another week has gone and we have been preserved in our going out, in our coming in.
Yours has been the vigilance that has turned threatened evils aside;
Yours the supplies that have nourished us;
Yours the comforts that have indulged us;
Yours the relationships and friends that have delighted us;
Yours the means of grace which have edified us;
Yours the book, which amidst all our enjoyments has told us that this is not our rest, that no matter our creature comforts one thing alone is necessary – to love our savior.
The only thing that can equal the number of your mercies are our imperfections and sins.
These, O God, we will not seek to hide or justify, but confess with a broken heart.
In what condition would private reviews of our lives leave us were it not for the assurance that with you there is abundant redemption; You are a forgiving God and you must be feared.
While we hope for pardon through the blood of the cross, we pray that we may be clothed with humility, quickened in our way, more devoted to you, always keeping the ends of our lives in view, cured of our foolishness and indiscretion.
Remind of us of how frail we are and teach us to number our days and apply our hearts to wisdom.
